Chapter 10
Callie
* * *
Okay, I had bombed the debate. Maybe I had taken it for granted that I was better at public speaking than Kilches and not prepared the way I should have. I had done good, but he was better.
When I drove through town after work the next day, his signs were everywhere, giving me even more reason to beat myself up. Pulling into my driveway, I rang Trina.
"I tanked it. I think I should just quit now and give Kilches the victory I know he's going to get," I vented, not even half serious but in serious need of a pep talk from my bestie.
Trina didn't disappoint, clearly not in the mood to put up with my shit. All I heard was a sharp intake of breath before she unleashed her fury.
"Girl. Don't even think about it. Shut your mouth. There are just as many people supporting you as there are supporting him and honestly what did you expect? He's the townâs golden boy. We knew it would be a tough race from the moment we learned who your opponent was. So he gives good debate and he answered a few questions better than we expected him to. So what?"
"A few? He got standing ovations before he even finished speaking! He annihilated me. He was so good," I whined. I knew I wasn't going to quit and I knew it hadn't gone as badly as it could have but I needed to hear someone else say it.
"Stop it. Stop it right now before I drive over there and whoop your ass." She paused and chuckled as she realized what she had said. "Honestly that isn't a bad idea. That's probably what you need."
"Touch me and I will break your arm all the way off," I threatened. My hackles were up but I was no longer feeling sorry for myself.
"Ha!" Trina snorted into the phone. "I'd like to see you try." We both laughed and then she softened. "I'm serious though. You probably could use some stress relief. Like a massage or⦠or⦠a hug!"
"A hug?"
"Yeah! A hug! On the butt⦠with a paddle." She burst into obnoxious laughter while I pulled the phone away from my ear and glared at her picture on the screen.
"Are you done?" I asked, putting it back up to my ear when the howls of laughter softened into giggles.
"Yeah. I guess. Seriously though. You're wound kind of tight. You don't work tomorrow so why donât you drive into the city and go to that club you like so much? Find yourself a new wonderdom?"
"Wonderdom, hug on the butt with a paddle⦠Where do you come up with this stuff?"
"It's a gift. For real though, think about it. It might do you some good."
It wasn't the worst advice she had ever given me, and I was really tempted to take it but the idea of having to go up there and put myself at the mercy of finding an unknown Dom for the night to fill my needs turned my stomach.
